PERSONAL THOUGHTS ON THIS PLANT:
Yaupon Holly is native to Texas and will thrive most every location here. The dwarf variety blends well in a variety of garden types, and is an excellent low growing shrub. I think it goes best as the first shrub behind the border planting in a bed, and can function well in a mass planting as well. Because it's reasonably prickly looking as a holly it could also work well under windows or other places where you don't want people walking.
The larger variety of Yaupon Holly 'Pride of Houston' is also a great choice for a low maintenance garden because of hoe tough it is in Houston's punishing environment. It works best in larger spaces, getting 15'-20' tall and is especially useful as a screen.
